Movie of The Week: Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm

Ah yes, what more can be said about Radu? He has been a good friend over the years, if not a bit underrated. The Subspecies series from Full Moon Entertainment has never failed to disappoint and I always include them when listing my favorite horror movies. This, the fourth and last(?) chapter fits right in with the others. The budget is low, however they do a nice job of lending an eerie atmosphere to the movie. The blood flows in rivers and Anders Hove does another impressive job as Radu. The acting is good for Full Moon as this was one of the last decent films made by the independent company. The good old days of decent low budget B-movies seem gone as you can tell if you've been unfortunate enough to see any of their current offerings (the latest Puppetmaster shown on SciFi with Corey Feldman will attest to that!). There are subtle nuances that make this series great. They were filmed in Romania and the setting plays huge in the feel of the movie. The film's score is to me one of the genre's best, adding to the atmosphere, and never overwhelming the scene. I can't imagine how Ted Nicolau directed these masterpieces and that afformentioned Puppetmaster debacle. The differences are amazing. Now if only full Moon would get off their asses and release the first three on DVD, then I'd be a happy camper. I just pray if they do a fifth installment, as it is rumored, it's not a piece of cheesy crap that totally disgraces the series like that other movie I keep mentioning! I give Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm **** out of *****.
